We use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT as our GL package, we have used the database version for years and now are using Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT more often. We are still learning the ins and outs of our specific needs, but I really like the reports. The reports are easier to access.
  • Reports
  • Vendor Information
  • Adding new funds
  • Import Journal Entries
  • Asset Allocation
Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is great for fund accounting-this works well for many levels of accounting.

We use it for accounts payable, fixed assets and accounting and reporting. I feel that it is a good platform with the exception of the financial statement presentation and the purchasing piece. Our old antiquated system printed the income statement on 2 pages but we cannot get Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT to do so and have discussed with support. My biggest issue is that we want to use it to do purchase requisitions but don't want non-financial users to have to enter a 4-segment account code per item to order. I worked through the set up with our implementation team only to find out that it would not work the way we had thought. I wanted to link the requisitioner to the cost center and item to g/l account so they would just have to select what they were ordering. Because of this we still have to use our old system for requisitions. Supposedly something may be in the works down the road but nothing definite has come through. Besides the time I spent on setup to only find out it would not work that way, we are very disappointed we have to use our old system for that piece. We do not have a large amount of items but need something to use.
  • pretty easy to use
  • accounts payable invoice scanning is a great feature.
  • the ability to spread costs is easier than the old system
  • purchase requisition piece
  • layout and appearance of income statement
  • ability to get check signature to "look better"
  • slowness at times
Wonderful for general financial reporting, fixed assets and account payable. Setting up security is tricky. Purchase requisition process does not fit all situations. Should have more flexibility with appearance of income statement.

I have used Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT for 5 years. I appreciate Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT more than the database view but understand the importance of both. I utilize all of the accounting functions and like the user-friendly interface. There have been times when the functions that we need are momentarily down, but Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is good at communicating these issues and the status of resolutions through the status webpage. The knowledgebase page is very helpful for common issues that other users have had. I look forward to what Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT has to offer with the conversion to Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT from the database.
  • Excel to Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT integration and add ins
  • Attachment allowance with Journal Entries and Invoices
  • Journal Entry line movement functionality
  • Database functions that do not exist in Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT, like custom reports
  • Query only available in database
Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is well suited for our organization involved in investment income and grantmaking. I have also used this system with a non-profit school and found it to be very useful. There are many functions that are able to add as needed to Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT which has also been very helpful.

We use the BB suite for our student database and fundraising and website as well as FE NXT. One factor is choosing BB was that it included all modules and was integrated. However, this is not exactly what happens in all cases. Our Tuition Mgmt did not originally integrate, and RE does not integrate with FE
  • I like the vendor invoice upload capability
  • Drilling down into detail is good
  • The budget upload is really hard to do
  • FE does not easily integrate with RE.
  • Our implementation process was terrible and we were not trained properly
  • Fixed asset module is a little wonky
  • the credit card process from Regions was long and drawn out and then the list serve started talking a lot about the reporting coming over to BB or on BB's side was duplicating. we had gone pretty far down the process and decided to not to continue
  • We were supposed to have a checkin from our Enrollment specialist in Tuition Management but that did not happen and caused an embarrasing mistake on our end.
  • We had a glitch with the Enrollment contract that could have been avoided if our implementation person had told us to check a box about the deposit - since for some people it did not collect it
We've had so many problems with the implementation and then with Expense management and getting training it is really hard for me to recommend Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT (FE) to anyone. We were told that training and implementation were by "project" yet when we did not implement or use something that we paid for we were not given a refund, but conversely, when we used our allotted "hours" devoted to a project we were cut off from training and support. After MANY emails and conversations, this was remedied to a point but it has left such a sour taste that I am very down on BlackBaud (BB).

I first began with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT in Accounts Payable and payroll. I now primarily use it for payroll only. I will create invoices for manual payroll checks that need to be re-issued, and then print them through the treasury features. I also use the database view to upload payroll GL entries, and web view to manage GL accounts and entries after the upload.
  • Entering invoices with defaults auto-filling based on vendor set-up
  • Reporting features are fairly straight forward and relatively easy to use
  • Lots of customizable configuration options to make it work for your business
  • The automatic interfund GL entries feature doesn't work in the actual GL entry feature in database mode if you have more than two companies/funds (i.e. - we have PR, PH and PA - if we do a GL entry and it involves all three funds, the entries are way off - they seem to only run them through one fund, which isn't accurate. In AP/AR, this feature works great .....but not in the GL end when more than two funds are being used.
  • Reports are more robust and seem to have more accurate information in Database view; it'd be nice to be equal in web view or database.
  • Also, for reporting, in web view, you can show unposted entries in your reports - it's really difficult to find this feature in database mode.
  • Fix the print function in web view - it always requires a download - functional, but the extra steps are annoying.
It's very well suited for managing Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable. It also does a great job on the accounting end, but some functionalities could be improved (see previous question). It would be great if there was more cohesion between web view and database view, as the functionality in web view is better and looks better, but I still find numerous things I have to use database view for; it'd be great not to have to jump back and forth.

We replaced our old CYMA software with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT in order to have a complete accounting system in one program instead of having CYMA along with hundreds of spreadsheets.
  • Accounts Payable.
  • Credit Card Charges.
  • Vendors.
  • Budgeting.
  • Bank Account Downloads frequently down.
We have been able to set up our account strings and add projects to track our gift accounts in a more detailed manner without having to do the tracking manually.

I enter new vendors and invoices for payments. I process payments thru Batch Report. I review account balances and invoices. I run Reports and Queries.
I work in all aspects of Accounts Payable.
  • It is very customizable to our needs
  • It lets you run reports through Invoices
  • works well for a team
  • Runs great Queries in Database
  • I'd like to be able to add (+) in the amount fields
  • I think the Batch Payment File could be improved to upload without making adjustments
  • Better Drill down and more info on Vendor records
It is well suited for a large company because it let's you select appropriate roles for each user.

I use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT in the daily financial operations of my organization. It's the primary software that our organization uses for expense management, cash management, budgeting, fixed asset management, cost allocations, and electronic record storage. I used Blackbaud's Fundware until that product was no longer supported. Once I made the switch to FE NXT, I realized that I should have switched sooner. The software is very user-friendly and easy to learn. In particular, I love the reporting functionality. I can create and style my own reports to match individualized needs within the organization. Currently, I'm working on launching the Expense Management module, which will allow for the electronic workflow of invoices and expense reimbursements from staff to supervisor to the accounting department. I am also working on linking our company credit cards so that FE NXT will pull in a feed of all transactions. This will eliminate the manual entry of hundreds of transactions annually. Overall, I really love FE NXT!
  • Reporting - users can create and design their own reports
  • Budgeting - annual budgets can be entered, allowing for great budget-to-actual reports throughout the year. Budgets can also be easily adjusted as the year progresses
  • Media - FE NXT allows for media attachments. This is a great place to electronically store copies of invoices, 1099s, W9s, contracts, correspondence, etc.
  • Credit Card Feed - the credit card feed would not link to the local bank that our credits cards were from; we switched to a national bank, however, and hopefully the issue will be eliminated!
FE NXT is very well suited for not-for-profit organizations. It has the capability to implement "projects" for various grants or funding opportunities so that expenses and other information can be tracked and maintained easily. Many grants also require very specific reporting. With the FE NXT reporting capabilities, these reports are easily created and saved for later use. The budgeting module is also very useful for not-for-profits that manage various funding and grants. Although this software works well for my organization, I think FE NXT might be a bit overwhelming for very small organizations with small budgets, a small number of expense transactions, no fixed assets, etc.

Financial users within the Foundation use for AP, and GL. Reporting to them is relatively easy. Struggle with providing standard reporting to non-financial users throughout the school that we support. Also still struggle with a very manual AP process. Do not have an expense management module.
  • Ability to drill down to detail
  • Ease of navigation
  • Reporting on attributes is difficult
  • Not having detail in GL until the AP/AR is posted, even though JEs are available when entered, pre-posting
IT is well suiting for managing the non-profit business, but we also have an LLC subsidiary where the profits are a source of funding for the non-profit. Running that as a business in the same ledger has been a struggle.

We use Blackbaud Financial Edge for Account Payables, Cash Receipts, General Ledger, and Fixed Assets. The integration between Raise's Edge and Financial Edge have dramatically reduced duplication of work. Also the import function within Cash Receipts increases efficiencies by decreasing duplication of data entry.
  • Customization of Reports. We can create reports that crosses fiscal years and report on account codes
  • Integration with Raiser's Edge. We integrated with RE about 3 year ago. Prior to that we had data entry on the RE side and we were duplicating it on the FE side
  • Fixed Assets. The ability to adjust acquisition cost is helpful
  • Reporting. Tough to find reports. The sort for "last run date" doesn't work
  • Queries. We use a lot of queries. There is no queries in NXT
  • No drop down on the bank account on the cash receipts. Given we have several bank accounts a drop down would be useful
  • Not having the Deposit Number Assigned that is problematic. We use database for all cash receipts
When review cash receipts it is nice to see the deposit import ID in a table format. As previously mentioned not having the deposit numbers being assigned that is a problem

As a system admin, I don't have much interaction with Blackbaud itself outside of setting up and managing users and occasionally troubleshooting issues. I honestly don't know a whole lot about what it is. All I can say for sure is that our Finance and Business Development departments use it extensively for donation campaigns (Raiser's Edge) and financial management of some sort (Financial Edge). I don't interact directly with either product so I can't comment on their uses for us specifically beyond that.
  • Honestly, nothing. Our users hate it. It's slow, buggy, overly complicated and is constantly down for maintenance during the business day.
  • In my experience, our users hate it so much, we're trying to disentangle ourselves from it so we can go somewhere else for our needs.
  • The problem with disentangling ourselves from it is that since the systems are so proprietary, extracting our data from it is exceedingly difficult, no doubt as intended.
  • I have no specific examples I can cite, but as I said, our users hate it overall. There are a LOT of missing features.
  • They have this old version of Financial Edge and Raiser's Edge that runs on Citrix on some old internal domain of theirs that has way more functionality than NXT.
  • In my experience, their legacy systems are very unstable, crashy, buggy and extremely slow. There is good reason for them to decommission that old system, but NXT was taken out of the oven WAY too soon. It needs a few more years of development.
In my opinion I can't even imagine what it's good for. Again, as a System Admin, all I ever see are the problems. I don't interact with the software directly so I don't even have a good understanding of what it does. All I know is that it's used for charitable donation management (Raiser's Edge) and financial... stuff (Financial Edge). All I ever hear are complaints and problems. So a scenario in which it's well suited? I guess if you have extremely basic, simple needs. Where is it less appropriate? If you need a functional product. Stay away.

Training at Blackbaud enabled me to set it up and work with it in less than 6 months. With the arrival of Financial Edge NXT, we adopted that platform. Product support during installation is invaluable. We also have Blackbaud host our data, which keeps our software up-to-date but gives us the security that I must have.- I am able to do budgeting, accounting, allocation, and accounts payable for the endowment and alumni relations. It has also enabled me to have department managers access their own departmental statements and monitor their actual costs against the approved budget.
  • Reports can be generated by all staff with minimal training.
  • Budgeting and preparing variances to actual can be done by all department chairs without going to accounting to have it done for them.
  • Because we have over 270 endowed funds in our investment pool, the allocation module allows us to record income (divided/interest, realized gains/losses and unrealized gains/losses to all funds properly and efficiently.
  • When creating journal entries, it would be more efficient if common fields could be. populated after the first line (e.g. date, journal reference)
  • Have the interface between Raisers' Edge NXT and Financial Edge NXT be less cumbersome.
  • Each allocation action for our 10 different fund managers takes at least 5 minutes to do the pre-allocation and another 5 minutes to post the entry.
  • Some times the allocation module performs the allocation but when you go look at the journal for approval, the first 6 funds are not what was shown on the allocation.
I think it is best suited for independent grade schools, high schools and probably small colleges. The software can expand to handle any of the accounting functions and integrate with other Blackbaud products as necessary. There is other not-for-profit software on the market but none with the reputation of Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT.

I use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT for accounts payable processing and vendor management as well as bank reconciliations and reporting. I also use it for journal entries and analyzing the general ledger. We use expense management to effectively capture all expenses for multiple grants that. Additionally, we use the excel add ins to help us import large journal entries into the general ledger.
  • Add ins for Excel
  • Reporting
  • Vendor management
  • Easy connection to bank accounts for accurate balances
  • Expand vendors for credit card management
  • Update approval process for payables so that administrators can see them even when they are not approved.
  • See all invoices in the recent invoice section and not just the ones processed by a particular user.
The online version of Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is very user friendly. It processes much faster than the database and streamlines the Accounts payable process which makes processing faster. I also find the bank registers easier to read, find transactions, and void payments. The absence of the accounts receivable module does cause some trouble because we have to use both the database and online version.

We use it for ledger and subledger purposes and reporting.
  • Connects easily with database view
  • shows account activity in dashboard setting
  • drills down easily on data
  • There is not a good replacement for the query functionality in database view and there should be as that is the most used feature in DB view
  • Once I have opened full screen on any account, JE, Reconciliation (etc.), there is not a "save and return" button. I have to manually start the search button back over from the main screen which seems cumbersome.
  • When finishing a reconciliation, JE, or report, there is not a easy to locate report to save for records retention. Seems like it's more work to go find the work I just did.
  • Our team has no idea how to make the payables function cut checks in NXT so we continue to use Database view for check printing.
  • We really should have a designated Blackbaud employee assigned to our account that helps our team locate useful training and readily answer questions about the software options available.
None of my team uses Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT team except for quick journal or payable searches. We do occasionally use the journal import feature with Excel, which has proven to be handy. We even find that the filter features on searching for journals is sometimes confusing and less than helpful. As far as the AP Process, we don't use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT for cutting checks or importing invoices, although these are features we use in Database view. For month end reconciliations, we rarely use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT. We find it more efficient to use database view for cash reconciliations, as the view is easier to compare the subledger to the activity than in Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT and once reconciled, it's easy to get the final reconciliation report printed, rather than having to search for it. As far as non cash account, we also use the query functionality to reconcile these accounts manually. So far I have not seen a query functionality in Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT nor a feasible alternative in Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT.

We use FE NXT for all aspects of our Accounting and Finance: - to enter our Revenue and Expenses (AR/AP); - run financial reports; - track budgets; - and manage treasury accounts. Our FE database is linked to our RE donor database, which eliminates the need for double data entry.
  • Interfaces with donor database.
  • Invoices are easy to input.
  • Easy to search for information.
  • Ability to use tags in report building.
  • Ability to rename reports.
  • The ability to run reports was down for several weeks recently.
  • I still use the database view to make journal entries. I can't get used to the interface, and many features are not available in NXT, such as global change.
The best thing about Financial Edge is the ability to bring donor records over from our Raiser's Edge donor database, eliminating the need for double entry. Financial Edge is built for nonprofits. It's not an accounting program adapted to the industry. I also like the ease of entering invoices. Especially the ability to copy a previous invoice. Such a time saver.

This is our sole accounting platform; it is how we manage all our books. We do fund accounting and need to track over 200 distinct funds with multiple layers of tracking.
  • Glitches constantly - when entering invoices in particular.
  • Reports are way too clunky and cumbersome to create.
  • Should be able to click on info from a report and drill down.
  • Need default reports that auto-pull ALL data so you don't accidentally exclude accounts or projects.
  • Need an easier way to group accounts on reports, including GL reports: to roll up all account codes into one section or line on an income statement, for instance.
  • Support is often unhelpful: they just refer you to KnowledgeBase articles.
  • Reports take way too long to run. Sometimes 20+ minutes!!
I can't think of any.

We use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT for all our general ledger, miscellaneous cash receipts, accounts payable, treasury management, and reporting. We have purchased the fixed assets module and intend to implement it for the 22-23 school year. We utilize the Microsoft JE integration features with excel and partner with Paymerang for payment automation. The interfaces are mostly seamless and cut down processing time.
  • Reports are easy to build and flexible
  • You can provide users with view-only access so higher level admin can view info on the fly
  • It is easy to use and fairly intuitive to set up
  • Queries were heavily utilized in the hosted version and adding a more robust list feature would be very useful
  • While the reporting is easy to use, the canned reports are limited. There were more reports available within the hosted version
  • The ability to print from google chrome no longer works so all reports need to be PDF'd to print - direct print would be ideal
Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is a fairly robust, easy system to use. As the company continues to transition features from its hosted environment, the product continues to improve. I would say its most significant stumbling block is its annual maintenance cost, particularly for smaller institutions. It is an investment, but customer service has generally been good. Consultant fees, if needed for implementation, have been rather reasonable. Overall, as school accounting software goes, it is a strong contender in the market.

I use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT for research, drill-ins, and budget adjustments. This product is not robust enough for our complicated agency.
  • Budget adjustment and manual budget entry
  • Drill does and specific data
  • Some reports are nice
  • THE DASHBOARDS are horrible. Very limited, not user friendly for set up and not robust enough for the many many grants we have.
  • The information is incomplete and does not have all program and project ID as FE does
  • Love to see ALL the reports that FE has in FENXT. Not even close
If there is a very small non-profit agency with maybe one or two grants then Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is great. If there is an agency that is large and complex then I would not recommend this product.

I use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT for mostly inputting invoices on the payable side. It helps keep things neat and organized.
  • Neat & organized
  • Easy to use
  • Not a fan that it is web-based. It should have its own separate application to make it faster
  • It's slow at times
  • When the cursor is on amount and I scroll down, it changes the amount since I'm scrolling down and I can't stand that
It's well suited when I'm doing any invoices. It's convenient and easy to learn since everything is fairly self-explanatory. It is nice to have the feature where you can duplicate invoices. That saves a ton of time, and I appreciate that.

I use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT to process accounts payable. The selling point was their email notifications. However, there have been many problems in the past three months, and we have had a case open for over a year.
  • Email notifications
  • Large screen compared to FE - much easier to read
  • Actual AP payment process is straight forward
  • The upgrades often create unintentional problems
  • Problem-solving is reactive, not proactive
  • Limited number of invoices that can be processed at one time. We have to limit it to approximately 110, or we get an error and must start from scratch
For payables, notifying our vendors with emails regarding payments is great.

Reduction in paper invoice processing. Allowing better real time activity.
  • Flexibility with alpha numeric platform
  • Allows for more end users to view data
  • A secure cloud-based platform
  • Friendly support staff when needed
  • Running reports is laborious; takes to long
  • The cash management is a bit clunky
  • Improved implementation process
  • Project managers with actual accounting experience in non-profits
They are a good fit in the not-for-profit space due to the ability in fund accounting.

Use it for an overall accounting system. The integration of the system and releases of new tools are less than adequate. We have to utilize both NXT and database view for several KEY modules. Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT has consistently pushed Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT yet does not have the aptitude to ensure the product is fully rolled out. This integration between modules has been going on for over 3 years. In my experience, Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is also famous for shutting down functions or modules and forcing the customer to other options, and then in order for the customer to be able to retrieve such historical information, the customer has to pay for that information to be extracted - Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is a very expensive product for the functionality and new advances it lacks, and likes to additionally bill customers frequently.
  • allows other companies (apps) to integrate) - Papersave
  • Roll out and fully integrate modules
  • stop charging for Blackbaud initiated required changes

FE NXT is our company's accounting software and accounts payable processor. We use it for financial close and reporting, budgeting and integrating with Blackbaud Raiser's Edge CRM. We have offices across the US that enter invoices using the Expense Module to route for approval. They also access reporting.
  • Web version is easy to navigate.
  • Exporting to Excel is useful.
  • System constantly freezes or breaks down.
  • Reports take too long to run and are not customizable enough.
  • Fixed Asset module did not calculate correctly so we couldn't use it.
  • Expense module does not allow admin view into approval status of entered payments.
  • System started duplicating journal entries for no reason.
  • Unable to integrate with other software-of-choice (Certify, Mineral Tree, etc.).
FE NXT is suited for small organizations with simple needs. FE NXT is not suited for organizations with larger databases, multiple worksites (de-centralized operations), and more complex reporting needs. FE NXT provides built-in reporting that may not meet the needs of more robust organizations.

Financial Edge NXT is used mostly by our foundation staff. We use it as our main accounting software. We use Raisers Edge for recording contributions and then integrate them with Financial Edge. This process is very easy as long as all your accounts are set up correctly. We would like to soon make Financial Edge NXT available for all of our advancement staff and some of our project directors. The challenge in this is being able to easily limit access to only the individual’s projects.
  • I love the copy invoice feature. This makes for quicker entry of our invoices.
  • The drill-down feature is also a plus when searching for a particular item.
  • Being able to export tables quickly is a timesaver.
  • At this time it doesn’t distribute negative entries to the correct project when there are multiple projects. This becomes a problem when you are trying to use a credit for one project but expenses invoice to a different project.
  • The edit feature for imported journal entries is more difficult than in Financial Edge.
  • The timeout feature logs you out too quickly.
Financial Edge NXT has its difficulties just like any program but it has many positive features. Access online was a big plus for us, as was the copy feature for invoices, receipts, etc. Those features have proven to be big timesavers. It is easy to use and learn.

We have been using Blackbaud products for over 20 years and last fall we made the choice to upgrade to the cloud version for the entire school products. Upgrading to Financial Edge NXT was not the driver---the student information system was the driver---but we are reaping many benefits from the NXT environment. Since using Financial Edge NXT, we rarely utilize the database version as the majority of day-to-day activities can now be done in NXT.
The benefits it has provided have been faster access to the system and more efficiency in our business office. We can get things done more quickly with the NXT version.
  • Data entry is much easier with NXT especially for accounts payable
  • Reporting is fantastic with the ability to drill down in the reports to the detail and to export reports in more consistent formats (PDF, Excel)
  • Bank reconciliation is a breeze with the cash management capabilities
  • Right now budgeting functions are only available for look ups, not for budget creation or editing
Financial Edge NXT is very well suited for the school environment.
